Over 1.1 billion people lack access to safe water. More than 2.6 billion people lives without access to improved sanitation facilities, and nearly 900 million people are not receiving clean drinking-water from improved water sources. The situation is particularly crucial with regard to sanitation, as less than half of the world’s rural population and only three quarters of its urban population have access to improved facilities. These people live at the base of the pyramid or in short – at the BOP. The BOP refers to the four billion people, with living costs lower than USD 3,000 a year, in developing countries around the world.
Safe and clean water is a scarce resource for the people living at the BOP, therefore an increased access to sufficient safe and clean water will save lives, help reduce poverty, and enhance the development impact. Companies that offer innovative and viable solutions can provide access to safe and clean water in combination with reaching new market.

Danish companies offer a range of unique water treatment solutions, which, if adapted appropriately, have the potential to enter an estimated $20 billion market. The BOP water market is characterized by aggregate volume rather than individual purchasing power, and stimulated by a significant increase in investments from local governments and international institutions.
