There is a wide variety of opportunities for addressing the demand of the USD 40 billion BOP market in South Africa. DIBD has studied the opportunities and identified three promising sectors.
Housing
The public and private housing projects that provide homes for the poor lack quality solutions and know-how. Combined with large government investments and demand from house owners, the sector holds several business opportunities.
Consumer Goods
The market for consumer goods (food and beverages, clothing, furniture, and personal care) is by far the largest BOP sector. National and international companies are already addressing the market, however, significant business opportunities still exist. A local partner is essential for facilitating distribution, promotion, and to spur the consumer preference for a new product.
Health
The BOP health market in South Africa (medicine, life-saving products, and health services) is a relatively small market, but a market in rapid growth. There is a demand for supply of various health products, from advanced machinery to simple medicine.
